Featured picture candidates Featured picture candidates are images that the community will vote on, to determine whether or not they will be highlighted as some of the finest on Commons. This page lists the candidates to become featured pictures. The picture of the day images are selected from featured pictures. Old candidates for Featured pictures are listed here. There are also chronological lists of featured pictures: 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and current month. Formal things[edit]Nominating[edit]Guidelines for nominators[edit]Please read the complete guidelines before nominating. This is a summary of what to look for when submitting and reviewing FP candidates:
Artworks, illustrations, and historical documents[edit]There are many different types of non-photographic media, including engravings, watercolors, paintings, etchings, and various others. Hence, it is difficult to set hard-and-fast guidelines. However, generally speaking, works can be divided into three types: Those that can be scanned, those that must be photographed, and those specifically created to illustrate a subject. Works that must be photographed include most paintings, sculptures, works too delicate or too unique to allow them to be put on a scanner, and so on. For these, the requirements for photography, below, may be mostly followed; however, it should be noted that photographs which cut off part of the original painting are generally not considered featurable. Works that may be scanned include most works created by processes that allow for mass distribution − for instance, illustrations published with novels. For these, it is generally accepted that a certain amount of extra manipulation is permissible to remove flaws inherent to one copy of the work, since the particular copy – of which hundreds, or even thousands of copies also exist – is not so important as the work itself. Works created to serve a purpose include diagrams, scientific illustrations, and demonstrations of contemporary artistic styles. For these, the main requirement is that they serve their purpose well. Provided the reproduction is of high quality, an artwork generally only needs one of the following four things to be featurable:
Digital restorations must also be well documented. An unedited version of the image should be uploaded locally, when possible, and cross-linked from the file hosting page. Edit notes should be specified in detail, such as "Rotated and cropped. Dirt, scratches, and stains removed. Histogram adjusted and colors balanced." Photographs[edit]On the technical side, we have focus, exposure, composition, movement control and depth of field.
On the graphic elements we have shape, volume, color, texture, perspective, balance, proportion, noise, etc.
You will maximise the chances of your nominations succeeding if you read the complete guidelines before nominating. Video and audio[edit]Please nominate videos, sounds, music, etc. at Commons:Featured media candidates. Set nominations[edit]If a group of images are thematically connected in a direct and obvious way, they can be nominated together as a set. A set should fall under one of the following types:
Simple tutorial for new users[edit]Adding a new nomination[edit]If you believe that you have found or created an image that could be considered valuable, with appropriate image description and licensing, then do the following. Step 1: copy the image name into this box, after the text already present in the box, for example, Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Your image filename.jpg. Then click on the "create new nomination" button. All single files:
Step 3: manually insert a link to the created page at the top of Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list: Click here, and add the following line to the TOP of the nominations list:
Strongly recommended: Please add a gallery page and section heading from the list at Commons FP galleries. Write the code as Page name#Section heading. For example: Optional: if you are not the creator of the image, please notify him/her using Note: Do not add an 'Alternative' image when you create a nomination. Selecting the best image is part of the nomination process. Alternatives are for different crops or post-processing of the original image, if they are suggested by voters. Voting[edit]Editors whose accounts have at least 10 days and 50 edits can vote. Everybody can vote for his/her own nominations. Anonymous (IP) votes are not allowed. You may use the following templates:
You may indicate that the image has no chance of success with the template reason - ~~~~, where reason explains why the image is clearly unacceptable as a FP. The template can only be used when there are no support votes other than the one from the nominator. A well-written review helps participants (photographers, nominators and reviewers) improve their skills by providing insight into the strengths and weaknesses of a picture. Explain your reasoning, especially when opposing a candidate (which has been carefully selected by the author/nominator). English is the most widely understood language on Commons, but any language may be used in your review. A helpful review will often reference one or more of the criteria listed above. Unhelpful reasons for opposing include:
Remember also to put your signature (~~~~). Featured picture delisting candidates[edit]Over time, featured picture standards change. It may be decided that for some pictures which were formerly "good enough", this is no longer the case. This is for listing an image which you believe no longer deserves to be a featured picture. For these, vote:
This can also be used for cases in which a previous version of an image was promoted to FP, but a newer version of the image has been made and is believed to be superior to the old version, e.g. a newly edited version of a photo or a new scan of a historical image. In particular, it is not intended for replacing older photos of a particular subject with newer photos of the same subject, or in any other case where the current FP and the proposed replacement are essentially different images. For these nominations, vote:
If you believe that some picture no longer meets the criteria for FP, you can nominate it for delisting, copying the image name into this box, after the text already present in the box: In the new delisting nomination page just created you should include:
After that, you have to manually insert a link to the created page at the top of Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list. As a courtesy, leave an informative note on the talk page(s) of the original creator, uploader(s), and nominator with a link to the delisting candidate. can be used for this purpose. Featured picture candidate policy[edit]General rules[edit]
Featuring and delisting rules[edit]A candidate will become a featured picture in compliance with following conditions:
The delisting rules are the same as those for FPs, with voting taking place over the same time period. The rule of the 5th day is applied to delisting candidates that have received no votes to delist, other than that of the proposer, by day 5. There is also a limit of two active delisting nominations per user, which is in addition to the limit of two active regular nominations. The FPCBot handles the vote counting and closing in most cases, current exceptions are candidates containing multiple versions of the image as well as FPXed and withdrawn nominations. Any experienced user may close the requests not handled by the bot. For instructions on how to close nominations, see Commons:Featured picture candidates/What to do after voting is finished. Also note that there is a manual review stage between when the bot has counted the votes and before the nomination is finally closed by the bot; this manual review can be done by any user familiar with the voting rules. Above all, be polite[edit]Please don't forget that the image you are judging is somebody's work. Avoid using phrases like "it looks terrible" and "I hate it". If you must oppose, please do so with consideration. Also remember that your command of English might not be the same as someone else's. Choose your words with care. Happy judging… and remember... all rules can be broken. See also[edit]

- Oppose The exposure has been well controlled, but the scene feels very cluttered to me, and the various lines all conflict with each other (the lines of the suspension cables, the lines of the buildings, and the lines of the trees bursting into the scene from all angles). --Bobulous (talk) 19:22, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

- Info One of the first restorations - I think - from the recent collaboration with the Archivo Storico Ricordi.
One issue: I'm pretty sure - and have sources to confirm - that it's actually Marcel Jambon - at least in modern spelling: back in the early 1900s it as a lot more common to change name spellings for different countries. I'm checking with the Wikimedian in Residence about that. It shouldn't matter at all, but would mean that this page and the file page will move to reflect that if it checks out. I'm listing by initials in the meantime.Edit:Yep. Adam Cuerden (talk) 03:41, 21 September 2020 (UTC) - Support That's quite nice. - Support Amazing to look at with the 360° viewer. Technically the weak side is a high level of noise in the 2D version, but considering the huge resolution (18,384 × 9,192 pixels), for an interior shot where the moving subjects are rather sharp and the DoF generous, I think 1600 ISO is forgivable. - Support Absolutely brilliant. A fascinating scene which takes several minutes to fully explore. It's well exposed, and has nice bursts of colour in amongst the chrome. The image is surprisingly noisy at 100%, but by the time the image is stretched to 100% it would be absolutely huge (nearly seven [4K 34-inch] monitors high and more than seven wide) so I see no real problem there. I can easily imagine seeing this in the Picture Of The Day box on the main page. --Bobulous (talk) 19:45, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

- Info With its decorative Italianate interior inspired by the work of Roman sculptors such as Luigi Fontana, St Mary le Strand is one of London's most unusual and interesting churches (still more for being located in the middle of a traffic island). Constructed between 1714 and 1724, its Baroque styling and plastered ceiling were highly controversial for an English church. There is a more conventional pew-level view but I think this view from the balcony is better. created by Diliff - uploaded by Diliff - nominated by Cmao20 -- Cmao20 (talk) 14:39, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

- Oppose Of course I see why you nominated this, with RBG having just passed away, but I think it's not an outstanding portrait in terms of image quality. There is quite a lot of colour noise and a large amount of JPEG artefacting which is a shame for a photo that is not especially large. For me it would be better to wait until emotions have died down a little over this sad event and see if there are better photos of Ms Ginsburg available. Cmao20 (talk) 01:27, 19 September 2020 (UTC)

- Weak oppose The subject is original and the composition good but the quality is clearly below FP level. It's too grainy (visiblem above all in the sky), lacks some sharpness and needs some perspective adjustments to get verticals vertical. I'd change my vote if the issues are successfully addressed Poco a poco (talk) 10:24, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
- Comment Looks like a top-down view to me. Doesn't make sense to fix the verticals in that case (I got the same remark in this nomination). Looking at the machine at full size, it's really tack sharp. Shot with an Hasselblad at 100 ISO. Apart from a very very little noise in the sky, I really don't see why the quality would be "clearly below FP" -- Basile Morin (talk) 13:26, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
- Indeed, the image quality looks fine to me. The grain is pretty minimal and not a big deal. And the excavator itself is really sharp. Cmao20 (talk) 17:28, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
- I was confused by this comment, thought it looked rather crappy for a high-class medium format camera – until I realized that that "Hasselblad" is the 1″ sensor on-board camera of the Mavic 2 Pro. Now it makes sense. Actually looks pretty good for a drone shot. --El Grafo (talk) 15:13, 20 September 2020 (UTC)
- Support I didn't like this shot the first several times I looked at its thumbnail. But on filling the screen with it, it does keep drawing the eye to the dozens of nested structures hidden within. And to my eye the detail on the main body of the machine is crispy even at 100%. The ancillary body to the right is softer but still offers enough detail to show off yet more structures within this beast of a machine. I like the parallel bands of colour, and the textures in the sandy layer. So I've changed my mind: this does feel like a striking image. --Bobulous (talk) 20:07, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

- Oppose I keep coming back to this image, but I just can't get it to work for me. The bridge and walkway invite the question: what are they there for, where do they go? And the image doesn't answer that. The shot is sharp and well exposed, but the scene just doesn't fit together for me. --Bobulous (talk) 20:13, 20 September 2020 (UTC)
- I understand that you're looking for an answer from the image, but I'll add an answer in text form anyway: this is along the Israel National Trail at the edge of Makhtesh Ramon. Basically a cliffside path. The bridge, if I recall correctly, only serves to take you to the little lookout area on the other side of it (the little area pictured). It was entirely optional, which I was glad for because it was old and missing planks and bowing in the middle and kind of scary. So the answers to "what is it there for" and "where does it go" are there... they're just not very interesting. :) Mainly I just liked the scene/composition. — Rhododendrites talk | 20:37, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

- Oppose Welcome to FPC (as far as I know, i haven't seen you nominate before). I like the shot but I think it is for me a bit more QI than FP. The subject is IMO not really that outstanding and for a building that isn't that naturally impressive I would only support a photo shot under excellent light or really outstanding composition. I actually like the composition, but I think the light is a little bit less than ideal - per KoH the shadows caused by the backlighting are not that attractive for me. There is also a little bit of blue chromatic aberration in the branches at the top, though this is easily fixable and not the reason for my oppose. Please, keep trying at FPC - this is not too far off the standard. Cmao20 (talk) 00:09, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
- @King of Hearts, Cmao20: Thank you for your reviews. The blurring of the branches at the very top of the image is not caused by CA, but by the extreme edge of a shifted lens (a Canon TS-E 24mm mk II, very possibly shifted to the maximum to give a 12mm rise). I don't believe that such loss of resolution can be fixed in post (but I am hoping Canon will soon release a newer model which exhibits this effect less severely). I did wonder if the backlighting would put off some people, but decided to nominate because my eye keeps getting caught by the soft glow of the building face even though it's in shade and competing with areas lit by direct sunlight. If anyone is interested, I could offer an alternative crop which removes most of the road, but I kept it originally because I liked the long shadows made by the gate in the low sun. --Bobulous (talk) 18:28, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose per others. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:00, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose I’m not at all sold on the composition, sorry. At least, I’d entirely crop out the foreground road. Then, I’d love to see more of the tree on the left, as a counterweight to the one on the right. --Kreuzschnabel 21:23, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

WeakSupport Nice (it reminds me that composition)but underexposed in my view. Even the background is not so bright- Basile Morin (talk) 01:00, 18 September 2020 (UTC)- Comment I don't think it's comparable with that composition. The "dark" wall is not an external facade like in the other picture you mention but the back wall of a passage. This windowless passage is very dark. I had to brighten it up a bit, in the original shot the wall was even darker. The background is a narrow inner courtyard, surrounded by high walls with no direct light (and not a large park; it was a sunny day when the picture was taken). --Llez (talk) 01:50, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
- Both compositions are comparable. Not the same images, but two centered compositions with round door in the wall, and vegetation behind. (And this is the aspect I like).
- Now of course I notice the camera is located in a darker room. Still, overall the image is divided into two parts: 1) One very dark foreground 2) One grey background. And just a tiny luminous area at the top of the stairs. 90% of the surface is too dark. You're saying there was no direct light in this narrow courtyard, due to tall walls, and yes, unfortunately that's visible: the exposure is not well set in my view. Sorry but same problem as here before it was fixed. You can increase quite a lot the light of the whole image and create a more appealing appearance -- Basile Morin (talk) 06:29, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

- Interesting consideration, however, none of these graves are exactly vertical, and the ground itself is curved. At full size, it's visible some are leaning right, and some are leaning left. Rotating will increase the angle of the grave most at the right in the foreground, that is already slightly leaning CW. Currently the walls of the building in the background are vertical. - Yes, I'm talking about the skulls here, not about the photo. See COM:DW. Don't know if they're supposed to be art, mass-produced decorative items or toys, but they are certainly not primarily utilitarian and above the threshold of originality. We can only keep them here if they're not subject to copyright for some reason, and in order for this to become FP this needs to be documented properly. --El Grafo (talk) 09:23, 17 September 2020 (UTC)
- Comment @Ikan Kekek & El Grafo There are unsigned pieces of a private collection in San Miguel Allende. As is almost always the case with Artesanías Mexicanas (Mexican curious) they are reinterpretations of very common cultural icons and I don´t think that they are truly original works. This type of figures can be found in just about any market in Mexico during Day of the Dead celebrations. --Tomascastelazo (talk) 17:38, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

- Comment El Grafo I suggest you read Mexican law. Between the Law and your opinion, I choose the Law. Under your rationale just about every picture of any object that depicts cultural ideas should be then be deleted. Mexican law refers to this type of work derivative work and it lacks enough originality to be granted copyright, on top of it not being signed. This is one of the millions of variants of skulls that relate to Mexican culture and death, day of the dead celebrations, etc. --Tomascastelazo (talk) 19:03, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

- Weak support Outstanding quality as ever but the crops disturb me a bit. I'd rather see the whole circle of the dome rather than have it cut off in various places. Also the crops aren't quite symmetrical which is a bit disturbing. Still, the very high resolution and beautiful details make it FP for me. Cmao20 (talk) 17:07, 15 September 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks dear Cmao20. I didn't crop the picture. The picture merged from 5 frames (50mp) that form a square with(more 100mp). I tried to capture the ceiling symmetrical but the Chandelier wasn't in the center. I could locate the Chandelier in the center and correct the ceiling Symmetry in the Photoshop, but If I had done that, the circle would cut more than this. - Oppose It's a vibrant scene, but there's no clear main subject, and if the subject is the street itself then the composition doesn't feel like it balances the various pieces. The light grey structure to the left is very much sidelined, and its outline fights with the buildings seen beyond it on both sides. The long building on the right is interesting but not very prominent in the scene, and the same holds for the tall pagoda in the distance beyond it. Additionally, to my eye the image needs to be rotated about two degrees clockwise. --Bobulous (talk) 19:14, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
- Comment In this picture main subject is not just one building or street. This photo was taken from the terrace of small building as shown in this picture. - Oppose The difference in brightness is very difficult to manage here. The burnt-out lights are disturbing. --Ermell (talk) 07:11, 14 September 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose Looks like a QI but lacks that certain something to impress me. --Peulle (talk) 12:14, 14 September 2020 (UTC)
- Support I dissent. The image quality is good and I like the light very much. Cmao20 (talk) 17:31, 14 September 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose the sharpness is good enough, but the harsh light in the background and composition don't quite work for me. I appreciate the idea of balancing the rocks with the tree, but it just feels like the rocks are "facing" left, where there could be more room. — Rhododendrites talk | 22:37, 14 September 2020 (UTC)
- Comment Of course I was hoping for broad support, and of course I think I took the best possible photo under the conditions on site :-) But I am very satisfied with the respectful tone of the critical or rejecting voices. Even if the picture does not become a featured one, I will keep this in good memory. --Superbass (talk) 07:22, 15 September 2020 (UTC)
- Weak oppose The blown highlights are not very well done. As Ermell says, it's difficult, but a successful trick is to underexpose - not only 1 EV, maybe 4 or 5 EV in that case. Example for comparison. Also mitigated wow factor in my view, but I could have remained neutral if the leaves were not burnt like now -- Basile Morin (talk) 02:33, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose per others. Nice idea, though. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:10, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose Technical issues per Ermell, but even without them this is just a picture of rocks balanced on each other in the woods that doesn't wow me. Daniel Case (talk) 02:17, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

- Support I'm not sure how this nomination will fare here, but I enjoy the peacefulness of the beach with the boat in the middleground and in fact center of the picture frame, half on sand and half on tide, rather than the foreground, with the clouds providing another horizontal above it. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:42, 13 September 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose The subject is interesting, but the composition boring (too centered) and ligthing and quality are not extraordinary, it's also tilted (see sea horizon) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Poco a poco (talk • contribs)
- Support I like it a lot --Kritzolina (talk) 20:11, 13 September 2020 (UTC)
- Comment The quality should be better. The sharpness is low and there are halos around some objects. --XRay talk 16:15, 14 September 2020 (UTC)
- Weak oppose per XRay, I like the composition though. Cmao20 (talk) 17:29, 14 September 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose Would have been better more tightly focused on the boat and the two guys at either end. Daniel Case (talk) 02:12, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

- Oppose I see the idea, but while it makes a QI easily it just doesn't keep it together for FA. First, the light is a little harsh ... I know this may have been the only time of day you could get the buildings lit, but if that's so this is not the picture with taking for FA. Second, unlike the Diliff image that Cmao linked, the regularity of the buildings is not there in enough quantity to overcome all the distractions like the cars and the trees. Daniel Case (talk) 03:08, 15 September 2020 (UTC)
- Comment The parked cars on the right side serve no compositional purpose and should be cropped out (leaving sufficient space to the right of the moving cars). -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 06:04, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

Closing a featured picture promotion request[edit]
The bot[edit]
Note that the description below is for manual closure, this is mostly not needed anymore as there exists a bot (FPCBot) that counts the votes and handles the process below. However after the bot has counted the votes a manual review step is used to make sure the count is correct before the bot again picks up the work.
Manual procedure[edit]
Any experienced user may close requests.
- In Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list click on the title/link of the candidate image, then [edit].
Add the result of the voting at the bottom (on a new line with a space first)
(for example see Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:The Bridge (August 2013).jpg). See also FPC-results-reviewed.
- Also edit the title of the candidate image template and add after the image tag
featured or not featured
For example:
:File:XXXXX.jpg
becomes
=== :File:XXXXX.jpg, featured === - Save your edit.
- If it is featured:
- Add the picture to the list of the four most recently featured pictures of an appropriate gallery of Commons:Featured pictures, list as the first one and delete the last one, so that the number is four again.
- Also add the picture to an appropriate gallery and section of Commons:Featured pictures, list. Click on the most appropriate link beneath where you just added it as one of the four images.
- Add the template to the image description page.
- If it was an alternative image, use the subpage/com-nom parameter: For example, if File:Foo.jpg was promoted at Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Bar.jpg, use
- If the image is already featured on another wikipedia, just add featured=1 to the Assessments template. For instance becomes
- Add the picture to the chronological list of featured pictures. Put it in the gallery using this format: File:xxxxx.jpg|# - Headline<br>created by xxxxx, uploaded by xxxxx, nominated by xxxxx
- The # should be replaced by 1 for the first image nominated that month, and counts up after that. Have a look at the other noms on that page for examples.
- You may simplify this if multiple things were done by the same user. E.g.: File:xxxxx.jpg|# - Headline<br>created, uploaded, and nominated by xxxxx
- Add == FP promotion ==
File:XXXXX.jpg to the Talk Page of the nominator.
- As the last step (whether the image is featured or not; including FPXed, FPDed and withdrawn nominations), open Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list, click on [edit], and find the transclusion of the nomination you've just finished closing. It will be of the form:

Copy it to the bottom of Commons:Featured picture candidates/Log/September 2020), save that page, and remove it from the candidate list.
Closing a delisting request[edit]
- In Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list click on the title/link of the candidate image, then [edit].
Add the result of the voting at the bottom (on a new line with a space first)
Result: x delist, x keep, x neutral => /not/ delisted. ~~~~
(for example see Commons:Featured picture candidates/removal/Image:Astrolabe-Persian-18C.jpg) - Also edit the title of the delisting candidate image template and add after the image tag
delisted or not delisted
For example:
=== :File:XXXXX.jpg === becomes === :File:XXXXX.jpg, delisted === - Move the actual template from Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list to the bottom of the actual month page on Commons:Featured picture candidates/Log/September 2020.
- If the outcome was not delisted, stop here. If it is delisted:
- Remove the picture from Commons:Featured pictures, list and any subpages.
- Edit the picture's description as follows:
- Replace the template Featured picture on the image description page by Delisted picture. If using the Assessments template, change featured=1 to featured=2 (do not change anything related to its status in other featured picture processes).
- Remove the image from all categories beginning with "Featured [pictures]" (example: Featured night shots, Featured pictures from Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, Featured pictures of Paris).
- Remove the "Commons quality assessment" claim (d:Property:P6731) "Wikimedia Commons featured picture" from the picture's Structured data.
- Add a delisting-comment to the original entry in chronological list of featured pictures in bold-face, e. g. delisted 2007-07-19 (1-6) with (1-6) meaning 1 keep and 6 delist votes (change as appropriate). The picture in the gallery is not removed.
- If this is a Delist and Replace, the delisting and promotion must both be done manually. To do the promotion, follow the steps in the above section. Note that the assessment tag on the file page and the promotion tag on the nominator's talk page won't pick up the /replace subpage that these nominations use.
Manual archiving of a withdrawn nomination[edit]
- In Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list click on the title/link of the candidate image, then [edit].
In the occasion that the FPCbot will not mark withdrawn nominations with a "to be reviewed" template and put them in Category:Featured picture candidates awaiting closure review just like if they were on the usual list, put the following "no" template:
- Also edit the title of the candidate image template and add after the image tag
not featured
For example:
:File:XXXXX.jpg
becomes
=== :File:XXXXX.jpg, not featured === - Save your edit.
- Open Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list, click on [edit], and find the transclusion of the nomination. It will be of the form:

Copy it to the bottom of Commons:Featured picture candidates/Log/September 2020), save that page, and remove it from the candidate list.
